Chalcedony that is uniformly colored red to reddish brown or flesh is known as carnelian. Its durability, beauty and abundance made chalcedony one of the earliest raw materials used by humans. Carnelian is a quartz crystal and a sub-variety of chalcedony. It is found in flesh-color to reddish brown to a uniform red. On Mohs’ scale of hardness, carnelian is 6.5 – 7. It has a waxy or dull luster and primary sources include Brazil, India and Uruguay.
