NATURAL STONE

The History of Natural Stone Flooring
By D.C. Bhandari
For millions of years, a combination of heat and pressure created blocks of natural stone, including granite, marble, travertine, limestone, and slate. As the earth’s crust began to grow and erode, it pushed minerals up from its core, forming massive rock deposits, which we refer to as “quarries”.
During the Roman Empire (27 BC to AD 476) engineers found another advantage of stone floors – heating. They built a small basement with pillars under the floor to support large stone squares. A vent was created at one end of the basement, and a fire was started under the opposite end.
Stone construction was first developed in India & Egypt over 5000 years ago, with the building of palaces and monuments and Mohan jodro, Hadapa using large bricks of mountain-cut material. Today, the pyramids at Giza have some of the oldest examples of natural stone flooring in the world, proving the long-term resilience of these surface coverings.

The use of stone in flooring continued to develop over time, and there is evidence that the Greeks were creating pebble mosaic floors as early as 3000 years ago. These were made by placing hundreds of small, rounded stones into a mortar bed to form an image. As this flooring material evolved, the pebbles were replaced by flat pieces of colorful stone tile.

There are other examples of natural stone materials being used across the ancient world. The Indian marble as a flooring material for its translucent abilities, particularly with light-colored stone that seemed to glow in the sunlight. The royal families of the Mughals & Carthaginian Empire had a special Indian & Turkish marble that they used to build all of their palaces as a symbol of prestige.

Makrana & Roman Marble Stone Floors
During the Mughal & Roman Empire, the art of natural stone flooring reached new heights of innovation. Masterful Roman architects were able to design a series of floors that were actually heated from below; these were the first below-surface radiant heating systems.

This process made use of large tiles propped up on joists so that a gap was created beneath the surface of the floor. A furnace was placed at one end of this gap and, while a vent was placed at the other end. The heat from the burning furnace was drawn across the bottom of the floor toward the vent, warming the tile above. These heated floors were used in the homes of the wealthy throughout the life of the empire.

After the fall of Rome, the art of making intricate stone and mosaic flooring was largely lost to Western Europe. While these skills would be preserved to some extent in Byzantium and through the Islamic world, European use of stone flooring was often relegated to scavenging pieces of material from old monuments and palaces that had fallen into.

It is often used in decorative art or as interior decoration. Most mosaics are made of small, flat, roughly square, pieces of stone or glass of different colors, known as tesserae. Some, especially floor mosaics, are made of small rounded pieces of stone, and called “pebble mosaics.

Granite
Granite Natural stone
Granite, coarse- or medium-grained intrusive igneous rock that is rich in quartz and feldspar; it is the most common plutonic rock of the Earth’s crust, forming by the cooling of magma at depth.
sodium-rich plagioclase feldspar; smaller smoky grains are quartz; black spots are biotite and hornblende.
Because of its use as paving block and as a building stone, the quarrying of granite was, at one time, a major industrial activity. Except for tombstones, however, for which there is a continuing demand, the present production of granite is geared to the fluctuating market for curbing in highway construction and veneer used in the facing of large industrial and commercial buildings.
Granites in which plagioclase greatly exceeds alkali feldspar are common in large regions of the United States and are thought to be characteristic of the great series of granite from the Bhandari marble group, Kishangarh, Rajasthan, India.

Granite is a light-colored igneous rock with grains large enough to be visible with the unaided eye. It forms from the slow crystallization of magma below Earth’s surface. Granite is composed mainly of quartz and feldspar with minor amounts of mica, amphiboles, and other minerals.
Granite is used in buildings, bridges, paving, monuments, and many other exterior projects. Indoors, polished granite slabs and tiles are used in countertops, tile floors, stair treads, and many other design elements.
Granite is a common type of felsic intrusive igneous rock that is granular and phaneritic in texture. Granites can be predominantly white, pink, or gray in color, depending on their mineralogy.

This stone is composed of small grains that are cemented by calcareous, feldspathic or siliceous cementing material. Mother nature gifted India with many colors and textures of sandstones, the impressive patterns, and colors in which Indian sandstone are available largely depend upon the type of cementing material. Some of the natural sandstone are able to receive the most elaborate range of filigree and carving work on account of their soft and homogeneous structure. Geologists are a reliable source for corny humor. I’m not sure why this trait is so prevalent in the field; maybe it’s the combination of science-geekiness, overall good cheer, and long days wandering outside looking at rocks. The stone BHANDARI MARBLE GROUP takes more than its fair share of abuse. “Get your BHANDARI together!” “Tuff is a rock made of volcanic ash. “This rock is a piece !” You get the idea. Geologists have a hard time resisting third-grade humor.
Puns aside, Marble is a metamorphic rock that is made mostly of mica minerals and has grains that are large enough to see with the naked eye. To put it another way, this stone sparkles like a Vegas hotel; its dazzling luster is its hallmark trait. The sparkly aesthetic comes from mica minerals, which are nature’s glitter.

If you’ve ever looked at a piece of mica up close, you can tell that it wants to separate into thin flakes. That’s because of the mineral’s internal structure – the atoms are arranged in thin, sheet-like layers. The family of flaky minerals includes Muscovite transparent or silver, biotite black or brown, chlorite dark green, talc white, grey, green, graphite metallic grey, and others. The flat shape of these minerals reflects light like a mirror.

In addition to mica minerals, often contains quartz, which gives the stone much more strength than if it were pure mica. Sometimes, other eye-catching minerals are in the mix.

forces transform dull mud to dazzling NATURAL STONE.
is a metamorphic rock, and it started out as a different kind of stone before it became so sparkly and awesome. In fact, STONE was boring before metamorphic forces got to it. If you compress mud underneath the weight of the ocean and a whole lot of other mud you get shale. If shale gets buried deeply, compressed, and heated it will turn into slate, which is denser and harder than shale. If the heating and compression increase, the slate will become phyllite, which is a shiny version of slate. Phyllite has a subtle shine because the original clay minerals in the shale have transformed into small mica minerals. If phyllite remains in the geologic pressure cooker, the mica minerals grow larger until they are glitter-sized.

If the metamorphism continues, the mica minerals won’t be able to tolerate the increasing heat and pressure and they will become feldspar’s. At that point the rock is called gneiss. And if the poor thing heats up even further, parts of it will begin to melt, creating a taffy-esque rock called migmatite. After that, the whole thing just melts and becomes liquid magma. That’s the rock cycle in a nutshell.

Each step in this metamorphic process is a graduation, and each type of stone eases into the next category. There are phyllites that could also be called schists, and stone that look almost like gneiss. To the chagrin of geology students everywhere, there are usually grey areas when identifying rocks.

This whole metamorphic process often happens in subduction zones, which are places where the ocean floor is colliding into a continent. We currently have subduction zones off INDIA, RAJASTHAN, KISHANGARH, the rocks on the ocean floor get shoved down into the Earth’s interior while the continent runs over them. All kinds of interesting things happen to the rocks in these collision sites; they get buried deeply, squeezed, folded, and bathed in hot, mineral-laden fluid. It makes sense that many of our most dynamic and colorful stones were formed.

Use the right STONE in the right place

NATURAL STONE can make wonderful dimension stone, landscaping stone, or counter-top slabs. In a showroom or stone dealer, you may not find many stones actually labeled as NATURAL STONE. In some cases, BHANDARI MARBLE GROUP are lumped in with slates and phyllites. This is especially true if the stone breaks into flat layers or if the mica grains are small. Some types of STONES are commercially categorized as granite. This is likely if it’s leaning more toward gneiss on the metamorphic spectrum. In either case, MARBLE warrants some extra attention to make sure it’s suitable for its intended use.
